Bromsgrove-based Contract Flooring Solutions has just taken delivery of its 15th Sprinter van used to deliver rolls of carpet, teams of fitters and all their tools to sites as far afield as South Wales and the North of England. Supplied by Kidderminster dealer Mudie-Bond, the Euro-5 Sprinter 313CDI is 15 per cent more fuel-efficient than the previous equivalent model, this equating to an extra 4.5 miles per gallon, with CO2 emissions down by 13 per cent. Contract Flooring Solutions Manager Stephen Day said: “We bought our first Sprinter seven years ago and it performed so well we’ve stuck with them ever since. They are well-liked by our carpet fitters, who appreciate the comfort and high level of standard safety equipment, as well as driver aids such as satellite navigation which we specify as options.” “Sprinters are very competitively priced too,” he continued. “We take advantage of the excellent finance packages available from Mercedes-Benz Financial Services, because the rates are better than any we can get from our bank.” And he added: “The main reason we keep coming back for more Sprinters, though, is the exceptional level of service from Mudie-Bond. The workshop team at Kidderminster look after us very well and are always ready to do a job at short notice or outside normal hours.

The announcement that the British Government was going to assist buyers of electrically powered vans this year came a bit too late for Canadian company Azure Dynamics, which develops electric-drive powertrains for vehicle manufacturers such as Ford. Azure Dynamics has announced plans to file for financial protection from its creditors under Canadian law. Unlike British law, this allows a company to continue trading, which is encouraging news for those customers who have already purchased Ford Transit Connect Electric vans. Although production of the vehicles has stopped at present, Azure is keen to assure customers that Warranty plans will be protected. A company spokesman added: “Our Ford electric vehicle product plans remain on track, as part of our commitment to provide customers the power of choice for fuel economy solutions across our lineup – from EcoBoost-powered vehicles and hybrids to plug-in hybrids and full electrics.” Azure Dynamics is just the latest in a list of companies that are capitalising on an increase in demand for battery-electric and plug-in hybrid-electric vehicles but have had problems staying afloat. If the world is keen to promote the use of zero-emission engines, then electrically powered vehicles and the companies which manufacture them will need more support and encouragement from national governments. Investment in advanced technology in these tough economic times is hard to justify if the returns are not there to support it. Hopefully this plan will give Azure time to recover financial stability and get back on the road to success.

Five leading van manufacturers have become partners of Van Excellence, the award-winning accreditation scheme that encourages high standards of van operation and driving. Fiat, Isuzu, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan and Volkswagen have pledged to work with fleet operators and the Freight Transport Association, which manages the scheme, to champion the interests of operators and drivers and develop new standards for customer service and dealership support. Mark Cartwright, FTA’s Head of Vans and Light Commercial Vehicles said: “We have developed strong and supportive relationships with each of the van makers during the development of Van Excellence. Becoming a partner of the scheme allows them to demonstrate their support for van operators and their drivers and their commitment to high standards of support and service for accredited fleets in vehicle acquisition and the after sales market.” He added: “We remain open to welcoming other van makers as Van Excellence partners in the near future.” FTA’s Van Excellence scheme was awarded the prestigious Best New Product or Service Award at the recent Fleet News Awards. A list of accredited partners already includes the likes of AAH Pharmaceuticals, Balfour Beatty, Bott Ltd and British Gas with many more currently undergoing the process.

At the risk of boring readers with ever more news regarding the avoidance of traffic problems during the Summer Olympics in London – here’s more! It’s now less than 100 days before the travelling Torch lights up the 2012 London Games, and although many firms and drivers ‘in the provinces’ don’t give two hoots (two toots?) about the Games, those living in the sought east and London will indeed be affected. The Freight Transport Association has therefore published its own comprehensive guide ‘The FTA Support Guide to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games’ which is packed with maps, diagrams and details of the expected restrictions that will be in force across London. Natalie Chapman, Head of Policy for London at FTA said: “It is vital that commercial vehicle operators intending to deliver into London and other Games venues over the next three and half months understand the restrictions and disruption that will be caused by the Games and plan around it.” “We are still waiting for Transport for London to release the final details of the restrictions next month but there is enough information available now for most businesses to start making serious plans and managing their deliveries and supply chains around the road closures, loading and unloading restrictions and other route changes that we know will apply.” The FTA Support Guide also includes advice for staff and drivers that can be used by employers to advise on attendance at work and unauthorised absence during the Games period and instructing drivers on additional precautions to be taken at a time of heightened security. Advice is also included on scheduling drivers’ time, arranging night-time deliveries and on the information to carry that the police and enforcement agencies may expect to see. FTA also announced further details of its ‘Freight Solutions for the London 2012 Games’ event taking place on 16 May in central London. Advice will be provided by Peter Hendy, Transport Commissioner for London, Sarah Bell, Traffic Commissioner with special responsibility for the Olympics and from the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA). ‘The FTA Support Guide to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games’ is available exclusively to FTA members. And finally, a warning – this will not be the last news item about Olympics transport issues in ‘iVan’!

Specialist vehicle converter and integrator, MacNeillie, is set to introduce its latest counter-terrorism support vehicle. The unit has been designed to provide maximum cubic body volume, whilst making extensive use of high-strength composite materials to reduce weight and optimise payload options. The new unit is configured for EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal), IEDD (Improvised Explosive Device Disposal) and CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear) and will enter service with an undisclosed authority. The vehicle is similar to a range of units which MacNeillie has recently supplied to a number of overseas markets, such as the Middle East. Based on a Mercedes Sprinter chassis, the cab incorporates a number of normal civilian emergency services features, such as ballistic and non-ballistic protection, screen guards and headlight protection, full suite audible and visual warning systems and run-flat tyres. The rear operations support module offers full height headroom and the spacious interior can be configured in a wide range of layouts to suit specific user requirements. Rear doors and associated ramp and lift options are offered, to accommodate equipment such as robots and UGVs (Unmanned Ground Vehicles). MacNeillie Managing Director, Nigel Rowley said: “Our high strength composites are proven in service to withstand a wide range of threats and incident environments, without compromise to the crews which operate them. We now have dedicated teams of electronics and communications specialists, who can provide service support in a secure environment. All that can be conducted if required in a covert, high security facility.”

Planning ahead, DPD’s CEO, Dwain McDonald.

DPD the parcel company is making its own plans to cope with London logistics when the Games come to town and is deploying 200 extra staff and opening an additional London depot. On peak days, over 800,000 spectators, athletes, officials and media representatives are expected to travel to the 24 Olympic venues across the capital. The extra volume of traffic coupled with travel, stopping and parking restrictions, are expected to cause severe congestion in and around London over the summer. As part of its contingency plans to maintain its service throughout the period of the Games, DPD will also extend its early delivery times between 05:00 and 07:00 and also offer to deliver from 18:00 to 21:00 in the evening. Collection hours will also be extended and there will be an increase in the number of depot and customer service staff; Other plans include the provision of support for drivers on routes with restrictions on stopping and parking. Drivers will be provided with assistants who will make the final delivery on foot (this will not apply to ‘lockdown’ venues). Dwain McDonald, DPD’s CEO commented: “Last year, we established a dedicated Olympics Project Team to ensure that we are ready to respond to the challenges created by this summer’s Olympics. From our close liaison with the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games and Transport for London it is clear that there will be severe congestion in a number of areas in and around London, particularly from mid July to mid September.” Dwain McDonald added: “We have appointed designated Olympics Specialists at each of the impacted depots who will collect real-time information on routes and make any adjustments accordingly. This will enable us to respond to disruptions in a quick and efficient manner and alert customers if an issue does arise.” To help customers plan ahead for the expected disruption, DPD has also produced a detailed matrix illustrating the specific postcodes and key dates that will be impacted by the Games. Dwain McDonald explained: “Using a simple traffic light system, the matrix allows customers to see at a glance when and where the Olympic distribution disruption hot-spots are and what the service impact will be. To avoid the hot-spots – we recommend companies review their shipping history to the affected locations and compare it against the matrix to see if they can make alternative arrangements such as changing delivery dates or addresses, or asking the receiver to collect from the local DPD depot.” For a copy of DPD’s Olympic Matrix or the company’s Olympic Bulletin visit: www.dpd.co.uk

Seven years after its foundation, the Transit Van Club has just signed up its 1,000th member. Darren Kempton, who owns two classic examples of Ford’s finest, is the “millennium member” and he was presented with a commemorative certificate from club founder Peter Lee. Darren, whose 1986 Mk II long wheelbase Transit is in daily use with his signage and vehicle graphics business, DJK Signs, said: “It’s a great honour. The Transit has been part of my life since I first started driving one in 1996, and now I have bought a second classic model, a 1969 Mk I camper van, as a restoration project.” The Transit Van Club was founded in 2005 to mark the van’s 40th birthday. “I never imagined the club would grow so quickly to reach 1,000 members,” said Peter Lee. “I think that says everything you need to know about the Transit and its place in people’s hearts.” Peter owns nine classic Transits, each used regularly. Club members enjoy displaying their vans at classic commercial vehicle events around the country. The next big events planned are the Classic and Vintage Commercial Show on 9/10 June and the 20/22 July Transit Van Club annual rally, both at Gaydon in Warwickshire. Members display their vehicles to help raise charity funds, often for children’s causes. The club – web address transitvanclub.co.uk – recently donated £1,000 to the Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity.
